Achilles Benz (1766-1852) The Spalentor in Basel, Switzerland
Sheet: 9 3/4 x 15 1/4 in. (24.8 x 38.7 cm.)
Unfinished. Pen and ink and watercolour on wove paper, watermarked J Whatman 1838. Inscribed in pencil on the verso, ‘Ben-’. This watercolour will be sold without a frame or mount.
Condition: There is some surface dirt on both sides of the sheet, and the paper has yellowed. Two vertical folds are visible, with light foxing marks on the lower part of the sheet. There are also three clean tears:
• a horizontal tear of approximately 75 mm on the lower left side of the sheet;
• a horizontal tear of approximately 42 mm extending from the lower right side;
• a vertical tear of approximately 12 mm rising from the lower centre edge.
Achilles Benz (1766 – 1852) was a Swiss painter, engraver, etcher and graphic artist associated with the Kleinmeister or “Little Masters” tradition. Born in Dietikon, Switzerland, he trained under Peter Birmann and specialised in romantic landscape views and architectural subjects, particularly of Switzerland.
