A fine drawing in good condition, executed with sumi (black ink) and wash on thin Japan laid onto another sheet of Japan paper. The old gentleman is shown wearing a patterned kimono reading from a scroll with a table by his side. Various notes written in characters are interspersed with objects throughout the image. There are two paper tabs on the upper verso attached to an old laid paper mount, watermarked “VAN GELDER ZONEN”.

Hua Tuo (c. 108-208 AD), the Chinese surgical pioneer and herbal expert, excelled as a physician, making significant strides in anaesthesia, surgery, and acupuncture.
