This watercolour is to be sold as seen, is in good condition and has had no conservation treatment.

Description

Catlow is recorded as having painted in the vicinity of Runswick Bay, in or around 1907. The scene depicted may be Mulgrave, a former ironstone exporting port on the North Yorkshire coast, midway between Staithes and Runswick Bay.

Catlow, George Spawton (1855-1925)

Born in Leicester 13 January 1855, the artist painted at Newlyn title in 1886, the earliest indication of a visit to West Cornwall. He exhibited at the R.A. and the R.I. from 1884 to 1916, works included views of Cornwall, the Midlands, and the Channel Islands. He was painting at Runswick Bay, Yorkshire, in 1907. Catlow died in Leicester, aged 70 on the 7th of April 1925.
