Portrait ‘Head and Shoulder Profile to Left’ of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852)
Red chalk and pencil on wove paper, watermarked; J Whatman 1810. Laid onto light blue board with monochrome wash and gold framing lines. Inscribed in black ink on the mount; B. 1760 – Drawing by E.F Burney – D. 1848. A further inscription on the back reads: E.F Burney from Wellesley Collection.
The drawing is a study which was later engraved by James Heath (1757-1834) c.1814. The print and the grisaille drawing sold at Christies do not belong to us, and will not be included in the sale.
