A large watercolour showing a group of the Highland Light Infantry on military maneuvers, painted in watercolour and body colour on wove paper. The picture is signed W. Stewart and is dated 1888 (lower left). One possible artist would be William Stewart, listed in the Dictionary of British Artists 1880 – 1940. He exhibited from 1880 to 1894 and was living in Greenock at the time the picture was painted. William Stewart exhibited one work at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, nineteen works at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, one work at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and eleven works at the Royal Scottish Academy. The picture is being offered without a mount or a frame.

Provenance: St. James’s Deeside Gallery, Dinnet Aberdeenshire. A label and a letter from the Gallery to a previous owner is dated 11 Dec. 1970/71). The letter is difficult to read but is written in reference to the watercolour.
