Description

This drawing illustrates John’s remarkable skill as a draftsman, his attention to detail and the fluidity of his hand make for a convincing study of Tenniel’s original. It would seem likely that the drawing was completed as an exercise while at Art School. The original is illustrated in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland / by Lewis Carroll; with a total of forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel. 1865. Tenniel was also the principal political cartoonist for Punch magazine.

John Sergeant illustrated magazines, pamphlets, and books, including covers for classics such as; Oliver Twist – Ginn and Company Ltd, 1963. Tom Sawyer – Zodiac Press 1969; The French Lieutenant – Heinemann 1971; Moonstone – Harper Collins, 1971; Emma – Zodiac Press 1978.

Most of the drawings by John Sergeant had until 2017 been stored in his studio at his home in Wales. On the whole, most of his loose paperwork has been kept in excellent condition. The drawing will be delivered in a clear protective polyester sleeve along with a gallery label listing all relevant details including provenance.
