British School (Regency period) – Design for a Dining Room
Pencil with watercolour and grey wash on thick paper. Stamped on reverse with a blind embossed stamp ‘BRISTOL | [image of crown] | PAPER’ lower left. On the back is a collector’s mark and an inscription written in pencil with the title “Dining Room in a Cottage at (Ha***ed?). The stamp is composed of two elements: a leopard or lion first, with, and below, a banner on which one can read the motto: “Tenax in Fide” which translates as “held in faith.” The identity of the collector who used this motto is unknown.
Watercolour : 7 x 10 1/8 in. (17.9 x 25.9 cm.)
Condition: Very good. This watercolour is to be sold as seen without a frame or mount and will be delivered in a conservation standard clear polyester sleeve.
This watercolour is likely to be an architect’s design, of the late 18th or early 19th century. To the right outside of the house are two figures seen walking among the trees with views of rolling countryside appearing outwards from the window on the far left. Although “Cottage” is in the title the building with its large windows and classic columns suggest a statelier building.
