Album Containing 122 Watercolour Sketches of Madeira 1883-4

This album was compiled in June 1884 by British tourists visiting the Island following a trip to Madeira between November 1883 – May 1884. Inscribed on the front and inside cover; sketches by Humphrey A. Hall and flowers by M.A.H. The pictures are centred around the Island’s capital Funchal, Santa Cruz and Machico. There are approximately 66 watercolours of places of interest such as Jones Hotel, Gateway to the Governor’s Palace, a Prison, Church, Custom House etc., there are also figure studies of local people such as beggars, boatmen, and soldiers etc., including landscapes and coastal subjects, sketches of farm implements, household utensils and everyday objects. The remaining 56 watercolours are botanical.

The album is to be sold in its present “as found” state. The watercolours have been pasted onto 58 sheets of thick paper. There are also a few loose clippings taken from the Daily Graphic, reports on Lord Randolph Churchill’s trip to Madeira in 1891.
