Hochecker, Franz (German, 1730-1782)

Hochecker was a landscape painter. In 1744 he married the sister of the painter Christian Georg Schütz the Elder. In the workshop of his brother-in-law, he became his employee. As a test piece created in 1760 for the Frankfurt Council he painted a view of Frankfurt, for which he received citizenship. Hochecker was influenced by Schütz, who for his part, drew inspiration from Dutch models and Italian Vedutists as well as from Herman Saftleven dJ Nachbarocke’s atmospheric ideal landscapes, Castles, and ruins. In later years, the work of the paintings by Schütz gain greater autonomy and show tendencies to classical landscape painting and a more realistic landscape conception.
