Description

Rievaulx Abbey was a Cistercian abbey, situated near Helmsley, North Yorkshire. It was one of the great abbeys in England until it was seized under Henry VIII in 1538 during the dissolution of the monasteries. The striking ruins of its main buildings have been recorded by some of the most accomplished artists of the 19th century, including Turner, Cotman, and Girtin.
