Description
John Giles, was a stockbroker and George Richmond’s closest friend. A deeply religious man Giles also cherished a glowing admiration for what he termed ” the grandeur and the superior wisdom of the Ancients”. He was often critical of modern times compared with the perfection of that golden past. This constant reference by John Giles to the “Ancients” resulted in the clique of friends being referred to by that name. George Richmond, Edward Calvert and Gile’s cousin Samuel Palmer were among the group.
