An inscription detailing the war (taken from James Grant’s: British Battles) is written in ink on the back of the original board, the inscription has been removed from the board to re-apply to a frame.

Description

In the Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro (3–5 May 1811), the British-Portuguese Army under Lord Wellington checked an attempt by the French Army of Portugal under Marshal André Masséna to relieve the besieged city of Almeida.

John F. Campbell was born in Falkirk, Stirlingshire in 1885 and was active as an illustrator in the UK between 1909 and 1930.  He illustrated several children's adventure books. including 'Heroes of Modern Crusades' by Edward Gilliatt (London: Seeley & Co., 1909);  'Heroes of the Elizabethan Age' by Edward Gilliatt (London: Seeley & Co., 1911); 'Under King Henry's Banners' by Percy Westerman (London: Pilgrim Press, 1914); 'The Black Arrow' by Robert Louis Stevenson (London: Cassell, 1915); and Heroes of the Indian Mutiny' by Edward Gilliatt (London: Seeley & Co., 1918).

 

He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1913.

 

The Census of 1911 gives his address as 19 Wilton Road, Muswell Hill, London.  He died in Hastings, Sussex in 1966
