Description

The artist, ‘unidentified’, is most likely to be a travelling coach painter or a signwriter who would supplement his daily income by painting portraits. The portraits have been painted well and have a certain Naive charm, they show all three sitters in a formal pose, perhaps an end of year celebration for an upcoming prosperous family. The man is shown with a military hat in one hand and a sword in the other, he looks pleased and proud of himself, ‘and his moustache’. The lady looks nonchalant wearing a black dress and plenty of expensive jewellery. The boy is simply happy with his toys and no doubt looking forward to some more over the Christmas period.
