E. Mondy – Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Out of stock

Signed E Mondy (bottom right) and dated 1871. Oil on canvas, displayed within an 18th century carved and gilded frame.

Description

A wonderful Victorian oil painting on canvas, a portrait of a Blenheim-coloured Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. No tears or repairs, the painting is in excellent condition having benefited from a light clean. The 18th-century carved and gilded frame, ‘although out of date’ befits the majesty of the dog who clearly snubs at anything other than the best she deserves.

Very little is known of the English painter, however, enough was thought of the artist to illustrate a full-page coloured photograph of a painting by E Mondy: ‘A Portrait of a White English Terrier’, dated 1875, in the book: ‘Dog Painting 1840-1940, A social history of the dog in art’, Colour Plate 38, p 105, published; Antique Collectors Club, 1992.

In the book, the artist is described as working with great technical skill, creating an almost photographic quality.
