Charles-André van Loo / After – Standing Man

Out of stock

Red chalk on laid paper, executed circa 1745-1800. Indistinctly signed in brown ink (lower right) with a pencil inscription on the back of the drawing, a further pencil inscription on the back appears to have been erased. The drawing is displayed in a new mount.

The present drawing was copied from one in a series of six academic figure studies designed and engraved by Carle van Loo in 1742-43. The different poses of the male models are combined with traditional compositional schemes. Individual figure studies such as these might be used by students as effective designs for religious subjects, such as the ‘Entombment of Christ’ or the ‘Resurrection’.
