An inscription written on the reverse of the frame reads: Study of a tree, for “orchard” painting or for one of the farm paintings about 1919-1920 or a little later. Pencil on grey ‘Michelin’ — paper heightened with white chalk by Allen Gwynne-Jones. Never exhibited. Purchased 1974 by Mr Roland Hughes.
The inscription suggests this drawing may have been a study for the large oil painting of an orchard which had been abandoned then later destroyed.
